    Permanent Inground Hammock Stand: Ideas

I have a large, flat lawn in my backyard that overlooks a small lake and wish to make a permanent hammock stand—something solid, in-the-ground (I don’t mind hoisting a shovel and using a little underground cement). I have a perfect flat grassy spot to view the lake yet private from neighbors, and I will do some nice plantings around it, so I really don’t want a portable stand (I can dig up this one up or chop it off if I ever have to). Cost not a major issue, just want to get it done right. I saw a video, I think it was Opie’s on the whoopiesling site, and he had a large permanent frame in his backyard– something like that. Maybe Opie will chime in.

Anyone have ideas or plans (height, spread, etc.), particularly those that have made one?? I’d especially like it if it had opportunity for mounting more than one hammock (i.e Gilligan and Skipper style) or had other uses than just a hammock, things I may not even be thinking of now. And of course I will use it to overnight test new gear.

I live in Illinois, and own a HH Expedition, ENO Single and Double and Kelty 9 Tarp—likely be using ENO most often on it. I am new to this forum, and I did an extensive search and found nothing about in-grpund permanent stands, but if I missed something, please direct me. Thank you all in advance. Your fellow hanger, Coolkayaker1

I'd do a giant arc where the bottom/ground part goes underground.
Or do this with fake palm trees

cool, I used 2, 12' 4x4 and 2, 16' 2x6. I spaced the 4x4's 15'5" apart face to face and set them in crete. Then used the 2x6 to span the distance at the top of the posts. The distance is perfect and I have 2 different heights set to hang either a gathered end or a bridge. This is a huge improvement over the poles I used to have set in the ground.

I still need to add bracing from each post triangulated up to the top beam as it is starting to sag due to the span. But so far its held up great.

Dig a test hole before you buy your posts. The deeper you can set them, the better. Hope for 4' deep. My bedrock is only 2' down where I set one pole in concrete, and it needed substantial bracing. A deep hole is better.

Kind what he said. If you use wood get it below frost line. Where I live its about 2 1/2 feet to be up to code for load bearing structures (decks etc) but we rarely get snow or really cold weather.
If you angled the posts outward would that do anything to lessen the stress on them?

How about something that looks like an arbor. That way you can win over the wife with its looks as well as invite her to relax beside you on the other two posts. Plus when you take down the hammocks it doesn't look like you just have two post sticking out of the ground.
    Just my 2 cents

Gazeebo. Big enough for a few hammocks, multipurpose for picnics/gatherings.

Got kids? Build a big playset with room for stringing up a hammock or three. Someone else just built one with a castle on top, hammock hangs up on the roof of the castle, very cool. And the Mrs. will think you did it for the kids.!

found it! Hammock castle by veepster!

I have three 6x6 posts in a triangle formation in my backyard. They're buried 30" deep, with a couple of bags of Quickrete each. I also drilled through each post near the top to attach eye hooks for easy setup using a carabiner if needed. I can hang three hammocks with this setup.

I don't have any pics of just the posts, but here's a few pics other other items with the posts in the pics too.

If you have any questions or want any more specific measurements, let me know and I'll be happy to get them for you.
