5 pound base weight hammock trip?

well, I tried really hard to get below five pounds for my latest section hike on the AT, inspired by buying a GG Murmur pack and an Edge tarp... and came really really close. I hiked from Sam's Gap south to Max Patch in three days, averaging over 20 miles a day, in what was memorably hot weather for me. I was remarkably comfortable with the following:

    Pack:
Gossamer Gear Murmur with 1 section sit pad,
GG plastic liner and mini-biner 10oz

    Sleep/shelter system:
Western Mountaineering High Lite mummy 5’-6” 15 oz.
JRB custom torso length underquilt 12 oz.
Travel hammock Ultralight with ridge line, misc. suspension shock chord
and mini-biners with HH tree huggers 14 oz.
Warbonnet “The Edge” with 4 titanium stakes and
Whoopie Sling 2-line ridgeline and guys 10 oz.
JRB modified DriDucks poncho undercover 9 oz.
100% deet, head net in zip lock bag 1 oz.
Sit pad for under feet counted above

    Toiletries:
Toilet paper, wet wipes, purell in zip lock bag 1 oz.

    Clothes:
The Underwear Guys neoprene socks 3 oz.
Extra pair of socks 1 oz.
JRB modified DriDucks poncho counted above
JRB torso UQ as jacket counted above
    Patagonia wind shirt 4 oz.

    Misc:
    Zip lock bag containing –
30’ 100 pound test kite string on winder
    Mini bottle lens cleaner
    Duct tape
    Pencil
Aqua Mira with extra cap and bag
    10 tablets ibuprofen
    Toothbrush, floss, toothpaste
    Princeton Tec headlamp
    Hydropel
    Trail guide sheet in ziplock
    Ear plugs in ziplock
    Vitamins
Single edged razor in cardboard sheath
    Bacitracin 12 oz.

    Water Bottles:
    2 gatorade ¾ liter bottles 1 oz.
Total 93 oz. or 5 lbs. 13 oz.

not quite sure I want to lose any more weight... and starting to think about a fall and a winter packing list. I know I could do summer under hammock insulation for a few onces less, but I like the comfort, and any other change will get me just a few grams, I think. I am particularly happy with GG Murmur, the Whoopie Sling tarp suspension and The Edge tarp. Oh, and yes, I don't bring a stove in the summer...

Impressive list. Thanks so much for posting. How'd you do against bugs with just the headnet and Deet? Did you miss something by going so light?

That's sick. I'm always respectful to you guys who get so low with the base weight. I just shaved down from 16.5lbs to 14.8lbs doing some recent gear changes for my summer gear based on my past week long outing. But I dont think I could go below 10lbs for a week long adventure.

What - No fishing pole ???

That is incredible - my pack likely weighs that much.

I am going to copy your list and think further on this.
    You UL guys are cool.

I've just depended on deet and a head net for quite a while now... and have found that most nights i start out nervous and put on the head net, but after an hour or so i just end up hanging it over my ridge line... and i've never used the deet. i have sprayed my hammock with permethrin... i was more nervous about bugs on this trip because it was so hot i couldn't stay under my sleeping bag -- i've always thought of the bag on top of me as my bug security blanket, so to speak... but i still didn't have a problem. i do try really hard to hang in an area where bugs aren't a nuisance when i arrive, and have walked on past some buggy campsites looking for friendlier places.

I didn't miss a thing. Not one thing. Well, maybe my ukulele.

I hope to someday get my base weight down to 10lbs. I don't think that UL is quite for me yet. I will never say never though.

Once you get your pack weight down that low, it's amazing how easy it was to do. While you're figuring it out, though, it seems nearly impossible.

I got my base weight under 10 lbs before I decided not to go any further. One of the gear lists is on my site. I've been getting pretty comfortable with my current setup so maybe it's time to mix things up a bit and see if I can do a 5 lbs trip. I'd have to stay at lower elevation since there's still snow in the mountains here.

    Thanks for posting!

    good for you!
i wonder, if you got a tq, to replace the WM highlite, how much would you save?
i think a comparable tq from some of the guys might come in at 12oz or less.

i'm at 7-8lbs for summer and 11lbs for winter...
i'm working on a SUL setup for sub 5lbs...
but for now i'm very happy at the weight i'm at...gives me the flexibility to add
extra gear and still be under 10lbs....or change my setup to fit my needs
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

i'll be using a Nunatak Ghost this coming weekend as TQ and it weighs right at 12 ounces so they are out there.
Kudos for the base weight-very impressive. I'm hovering 12-14 base and am shooting for 10.
