I found this site where the pad had 3/8' holes punched in it to reduce condensation.

I did not find anything with search that addressed this approach.
Comments?

My original reason for slitting my Closed foam underpad was to make it easier to fold for pack frame. Have used it a lot and now that I think of it have not had any condensation issues with it compared to the one I had before that wasn't slit. I have not noticed any draft or coldspot issues using it either.
??????????
Perhaps as a way to lighten the load for groundlings, but one problem for us is convection heat loss, I'm thinking this would (maybe?) be a problem with holes in the pad.
Maybe for summer use?
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.
There would be room for some convection currents in a 3/8" hole. Maybe smaller holes? I might be willing to trade some convection for loss of moisture. How much ventilation would need determined for each user.Perhaps as a way to lighten the load for groundlings, but one problem for us is convection heat loss, I'm thinking this would (maybe?) be a problem with holes in the pad.

I have been using the one with just slits cut in it and have been in temps down to 42 F in it with high humidty and heavy rain and have not experienced any noticable heat loss and NO condensation.
What I lack in knowledge I MORE than make up for with opinions.

What is the spacing on the slits that you cut in the pad?I have been using the one with just slits cut in it and have been in temps down to 42 F in it with high humidty and heavy rain and have not experienced any noticable heat loss and NO condensation.
I'd consider making lots of very small holes... say less than 1/8" you'll still have some convection but it'll be low.
i have seen ironing board pads for sale before..they are roughtly the right size and would be cheap to try..and they coem full of holes to boot..
Thanks for the reply on slit spacing. I would like to find ways to reduce condensation of a pad when used.
