SHT Trail Maintenance and Hiking Trip in September

I am planning a trip up to the Superior Hiking Trail in September to do some trail maintenance. The weekend of the 25th and 26th they will be working on extending the trail between Duluth and Two Harbors. I plan to go up on the 24th and hang somewhere near the place where we will be doing the work, do the work on the trail through the weekend and then hike from Two Harbors to either Finland or Crosby Manitou State Park the 27th through the 30th.

If anyone is interested in joining me to help with the trail maintenance, to hike or do both. Let me know if you plan to go. If you plan to volunteer to do the work, you will need to contact the SHT trail maintenance people at [email protected] at least one week before the 25th.

I am also looking for some seasonal advice from anyone that has been on the SHT in September as to the conditions, weather and temperature. I have a Crowsnest 3-season on the way, I have a 40 degree down bag and all sorts of temperature specific clothing (I work outside year round). I am looking for suggestions for proper clothing for the temperature, if I have enough insulation for this time of year and food suggestions for a 3-4 day trip. Thank you all.

I would love to but am gigging that weekend..... good on you though.
Expect cold nights....... it is a wonderful time to be up there.
Crowsnest will more than likely keep you good and snug......
May need to beef up that 40º bag .... I would bring a 20º if you have one.

Thankee Savage for volunteering and asking for others to do trail maintenance. We can never have too many helping hands when it comes to trail maintenance. Use the proper tools for the job and practice the safe working skills that you were taught and all will be find.

The SHTis always in need of help, it is located right in the path of most weather systems that go west to east, and any additional trail gives hikers more options when other parts of the trail are in need of some repair work.

Once again....THANK YOU...and have a great time in the Piney woods brother.

BTW-Are you a member of the NCTA, and if so what chapter?

    Happy trails,

    SHT in Sept

I would expect temps down to the 20's. Maybe rain, maybe not. Follow NOAA for 55616 and 55603. Ya never know. Shouldn't snow anyway.
A hike in late Sept sounds good. I live in Finland. Can't do the volunteer work, SHT does not allow dogs and I have to take him out anyway.

I can't in all good conscience use the beautiful trials that are avaliable to me without giving something back. There is no free lunch. I may not be able to afford lots of things but I can always give of my time.

I am not currently a member of the NCTA, yet. I have hiked the NCT with the group from the Northern Hang. That trail is very beautiful. I will definately have to get back up there sometime.

I am also looking at becoming a member of the SHTA.

Thank you all so much for the advice. I am taking all of this info into consideration. I am doing research on Top Quilts as we speak.

From the information I have received from the SHTA, there is a possiblity there will be some bridge building going on that weekend. That sounds really exciting. Either way this will be a rewarding trip.

I plan to take lots of pictures and video while I am up there. I hope that my batteries hold out. Any thoughts on Solar Battery chargers?

I would be interested to know if bug netting is needed at this time of year(late sept. SHT).

Naw ....... you won't be needing it in late Sept unless you like one to slow a breeze and keep in some heat.
Pretty cool that time of year up there at night.
