    Cheap Insulation?

Well, I did my first overnight hang this weekend in my ENO Double. It was definitely a success. I used a ThermaRest clone for bottom insulation along with my Eureka Cimmeron bag for top. It was not especially cold, I just wanted to see how it would go before it REALLY mattered. I found that the pad was not really the best solution as I am sure many of you already know. I would really like an under quilt. I am currently unemployed (going to school) and they look to be fairly pricy. I have never sewn a thing in my life and not sure I really want to tackle that one. Do you have any suggestions for cost effective under quilts that can be packed? Thanks!

Try MacEntyre. His IX UQ is nice, and not very expensive.

I have seen some success using a US military poncho liner tied the bottom of a hammock to act as a quilt. These are rather cheap and easy to find. Plus you can use them as a blanket in the summer months. Poncho liners have tie outs along all the edges.

Before you run out and buy one, maybe some more experience hangers can chime in on this concept. I haven't searched the forum for this option.

I have been using an indoor-outdoor fleece blanket from LL Bean ($25.00) as an UQ, with Grip Clips as attachment points. The bottom is a smooth waterproof material, and the reverse is nice fleece. Once I get a real UQ, I can use this as a top quilt.

I'm about to make a poncho liner uq if it ever shows up in the mail...
I've asked dejoha some questions about his setup and he was very helpful. most of the members that know something on here are very friendly and helpful so feel free to ask away.

That was my first underquilt. It was bulky, but it worked great. I cut a 20degree bag in half, one half for me and one half for my wife. Sewed some loops along the edges for the suspension. We camped in the lower 20's and stayed fairly warm...we also had a hammock sock, and a 40 degree sleeping bag/top quilt.

Here is a pic of the makeshift uq:
