Whoopies getting sticky?

Question for you more experienced whoopie sling users.

Earlier this year I set Restless Legs up with a set of whoppie slings (1/8 Silver Amsteel Blue) to use with his Hennesy Deep Jungle on a thru-hike. He's getting ready to flip-flop, starting sobo from Maine & will need a few gear adjustments.

He reported that his whoppies are getting sticky & hard to operate. He asked if this was normal with almost daily use. I'm not exactly sure what he meant without seeing the whoopies myself.

Any ideas?

I have enough 7/64th Black Amsteel to make another set before he reaches Pine Grove Furnace approx next Tuesday. Is there something I should be watching for when I make the new set?

... or any HF members have a reliable set they'd part with in case it's something I'm doing wrong?

Some trees drop small sticky droplets - not sure if its the work of an insect or the trees sap. I've noticed it on cars etc. Has he tried washing them? Not sure if amsteel can be washed but I can't imagine it does it harm...

It sounds like he has sap on them?

Lots of sling use here, but none sticky.

He should try washing them. The amsteel will handle soaps and detergents w/o problem.

From what I have read elsewhere on the forums, I think it is: "turpentine" or turpentine products that work great for removing sap, but I can't see a wash hurting them

Thanks for the suggestions. I finished the replacement set tonight and ask that I get the old ones back. I'll check them out and report what I find. Maybe a good washing might help them out?

Couldn't hurt, I suppose. I would just be sure to check for any damage afterward, just in case.
