Trip Report - Superior Hiking Trail - Split Rock State Park

Mrs. Beep and I took a Friday/Saturday/Sunday trip last weekend to the "north shore" of Lake Superior to hike a new (to us) section of the Superior Hiking Trail.
We drove up Friday to Split Rock State Park and hiked south along the SHT to a campground along the Split Rock River...and directly across from...(ta da!)...the Split Rock!!

Saturday we backtracked a bit and headed north, putting in about 8 1/2 miles before settling into the Chapin Ridge campsite. Sunday we were up early and back to the car in the state park before lunch!

Weather was generally clear but hot (for Minnesota!). Daytime temperatures in the low to mid 80's and night time lows around 60 degrees. I thought the salt patterns left on my shirt were quite artistic!

One of the highlights of the trip was Mrs. Beep's comment to me to the effect that she didn't ever want to go back to a tent!! Yay! FWIW, we have matching WBBB in "mirror image" configuration.

I will be hiking through there in September. This just makes the wait until then all that much harder.

Those pictures are beautiful. Almost like postcards.

I am game to go up in the winter and do a Northern Winter Hang in this area. Anyone else? Early December sounds good to me. Suggestions?

I really like the Split Rock area, one of my favorite places. I camped on the Split Rock loop twice this year. I really like the campsites on the loop...particularly the Northwest Split Rock River campsite at the bridge crossing and the Southeast Split Rock River campsite right on the river across from the stone pillars. I may have to go back there again this fall. The loop tends to be pretty busy with day hikers in the summer but both times I went there I didn't see any campers at any of the sites which was surprising.
