UQ/TQ Combo from a sleeping bag?

How effective would it be for me to take an old 40 degree rated sleeping bag, cut a hole in the bottom, and then run an end of my Double nest through that hole, to work as a bottom/top quilt combo, where I could then just use, maybe a small blanket inside?

    Would this work?

I did the same with a 20 degree bag except I just unzipped the first couple of inches of the two way zipper at the bottom. It worked fairly well in the backyard. With that and a lot of clothes and a quilt, I was pretty warm at 11 degrees. Issues to consider are:
    - weight (too heavy & bulky for backpacking)
    - the top side is held away from you by the sides of the hammock
    - attaching the head end can be challenging
    - if it's a rectangular bag, you need to make the foot smaller (you can tie it up).

Try it and see how it works.
