There is nowhere in the state of south carolina that you're going to get any relief from the heat and humidity. This weekend is going to be brutal, and there's probably another 2 or 3 months left of it.

Weather in my So Cal suburb right now is 68F with an expected high of 78.

An hour and half away, in Palm Springs, where I will be in two weeks the high today will be 112F! (But it's dry heat, or so they say!)

For those unfamiliar with PS, the desert floor is framed by mountains. You can take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and in 15 minutes go straight up from the desert floor at 2,600 elevation, to the mountain station at 8,500 ft. You literally go from desert to alpine forest in 15 minutes!

The amazing thing is, that the temp in the Palm Springs desert right now is 102F, but the temp at the top of the tram is 71F! How else can you experience a 31 degree drop in temperature in 15 minutes without jumping into cold water or entering a walk-in freezer!?

Today Delaware Watergap temp was 95. If not for people leaving water at trail heads in NY and Conn, the thru hikers would be having a stroke.

I went to the Smokeys one summer to get away from the SC heat.
It was 97 degrees when I left Greenville SC. 3 hours later at Smokemont in Cherokee NC, it was 67 degrees.
Right now at 10:30 Saturday night, it is 90 here and 74 in Cherokee.

That's nothing....I live up in Northern Arizona right now in the desert just down from the Kaibab Plateau (where the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is) and we are in the middle of monsoon season. A week ago it was 108* in the shade (probably 115*-120* in the sun) and the day started with probably 40-50% humidity. Suddenly everywhere around us it was raining hard but we still had the sun shining on us and got all the humidity from the clouds. It must have shot up to 80% humidity in about 10 minutes and then finally 20 minutes after that it rained and was a huge relief. For those 20 minutes though everyone at the place where I work felt like they were melting on the surface of the sun, I'll bet the heat index was at least 130 in the sun. Times like those I wish the shop I worked in had an A/C and not a swamp cooler.

Montgomery AL - it's been in the mid 90s with dew points in the mid 70s (heat index 105-110) for about the past month. I'm not sure if I'm "the man" or "the really dumb man" but I went on a 27 mile bike ride yesterday while it was 101 degrees. The dew point varied between 75 (heat index 115) and as high as 80 (heat index 122). I beat the thunderstorm by about 15 minutes. It rapidly cooled down to about 83 degrees and man, did that ever feel good!!!!

The only place on the planet that is worse than this is the Persian Gulf, Kuwait, and southern Iraq. I've seen a lot of 120 degree heat in Iraq and Kuwait, but it seems to be much more humid right on the Gulf. There's nothing quite like stepping out of your tent at 4 am and it's already over 100 degrees.

Mt Mitchell is close. The summit all time high was about 80. That record may be in danger though, still its cooler. Roan sounds good. Cherokee in those thick growth areas, it should be noticeably cooler as well.

On one of our national news casts it was being reported that
    at least in Canada
where there have been many high temperature records set,
That this has been the hottest year on record.

    Some talk about climate change,
but I heard last year that some scientists believe
that the sun is actually burning hotter these days ???
