Monongahela National Forest is a fantastic place to hike. As a ground dweller, I've never used a hammock there, but there are plenty of areas that would be ideal for your hammock. I'm partial to the roaring plaines ares myself. Its one of my favorite places to hike in the east.

I noticed you said 4D, 3N? I cant find that grid anywhere on my collection of maps so I can't comment on the location you planned. Here is a good set of maps for the Sods: http://www.wvhighlands.org/Maps/Doll...24K%20Maps.pdf

With the above maps, if you give me a grid, then I might be able to help.

That said, I've never been to the new northern expansion area yet. I'm thinking of planning 4 day trip there in october as well. More information on the norther expansion: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-...ilderness.html

You could come and scope out some trails at our Sept. group hang at the Sods.

Since Dolly Sods North got wilderness designation the trails are marked much better and it's harder to get lost there (it used to be easy). Watch the weather carefully; it can get cold up on that plateau. The southern half is gorgeous, too. I like the falls on Red Creek. Watch the weather carefully; Red Creek can be tough to cross if the water's up.
4D, 3N= 4 days & 3 nights, right? That's long enough for the weather to change 6 times. Have you done much winter camping? I'm not sure they plow that road.

You should get some good information from people attending the September MAHHA hang, too. Nothing like a recent scouting report.

Check out midatlantichikes.htm. They have lots of good trips with maps and downloadable track files (if you use a gps).
