Just returned from the ADK High Peaks

Hi everyone, newbie here, btw I think this forum is a great source of info, thanks for shearing your experience.
I just returned from a backpacking trip into the High Peaks region of Upstate NY where I was able to try out my new Kelty 9 tarp. Great tarp! Used the info on the site to make a ridge line and it hung fast and easy. Thanks again.

I was a little cool at night and have been reading about top quilts and bottom quilts and was wondering how well do these pack up? My sleeping bag is rated for 30* and weights less than 2lbs, but this trip when the temps dropped at night to about 50* with a lite breeze, I seem to get cold spot under me.
I got up and put my space blanket under me and it seem to help some, but when I got up, my bag was wet from condensation.
I was carrying a 35lb pack back in about 6 miles, also it was full, so looking for some suggestions about how to get this done! Was the envy of the ground dwellers and have no intentions on going back!!!

Welcome Phelps. I also spend a great deal of time in the adks (I usually stay away from the high peaks though). What you experienced is quite common; both the cold spots and the condensation on the space blanket. You will want to use either a ccf pad or an underquilt in the future and at lower temps.

I'd recommend looking at an UQ if you're serious about the switch. Any time below 75*+ I will use an UQ, even a winter version, and it will keep me nice and cozy. I don't need much of a blanket on top until down into the 60's and the UQ packs down pretty small, smaller than my 30* mummy bag.
oldgringo's reply to my worrying about owning extra hammocks:

How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?

Thanks DuctTape, Not sure what you mean by a ccf pad? Is that a sleep bag pad like my Big Agnes Insulated Air Core? I tryed that and found it real hard to stay on top of in the hammock. Do you use an underquilt and if so, what type?

Thanks Kukri. What type of underquilt do you use or which would you suggest for my HH? What do you know about the underquilts Hennessy makes? They look like a backpackers nightmare?

    ccf= closed cell foam

The BA insulated aircore is difficult to use in my claytor hammock, I can only imagine in a hennesy it would be extremely difficult.

I use one of Leigh's 2/3 UQ for the summer.

    Got it! thanks again.

I was just on the HH site and was looking at their 4 season insulation package.

I like the fact that you don't have to take it all apart to break camp, you can get it all in one stuff sack. A bit curious about how small it can stuff down too?
Does anyone used one of these systems?
With having to carry a bear canister, my pack is already full!

    phelps,
congrats to your successful outing in the high peaks!
I'm headed up to the blue line this august and sept
and want to get a group hang together .......
    want to join me/us?
I got a thread about this going .....

    and for an UQ
I modified a summer weight center zip sleeping bag.
with a range of convertable gear I can handle most temp ranges.
the dacks sure have a wide range!
