I’ve got some ideas and questions on diy UQs and TQs. My first idea is for a modular UQ. I’m thinking about a ripstop nylon outer and a fleece inner, just basically a two-sided blanket, darted at the ends, of course, to help with hammock conformity. The fleece would have an overlapping slit, maybe with Velcro or something, that would allow me to put in extra insulation. That’s where my first question comes in. What kind of insulation options do I have? I’ve thought about either making some down pillows or purchasing some that I put into the UQ. Also, I’ve thought about using batting or other synthetics. The benefit I’m seeing here is that I can have a thin UQ for warmer weather, just to keep the morning chill away, or I can load it with the pillows for something compressible but lofty and warm for the colder times of the year.
My second question concerning UQs is if I had a WBBB could I just stuff the pillows in between the layers where a pad would usually go or would it compress the down when I got in it?
My TQ idea isn’t quite so modular. Currently my sleeping bag works well for lower temps, so I’m looking at something for the warmer temps. I’ve seen talk about the silk liners being used as TQs. I’ve thought about that but also thought it might not be warm enough. So my idea is to make a TQ with a fleece outer and silk inner. My question here is what kind of temps have people used just the silk liner for and would my idea be too hot for temps like high 60s to low 70s?
