Well, if you wanted to avoid knots altogether you could just make the entire thing out of Dynaglide. All of the connections could be spliced instead of being knotted. It would probably end up being waaaay expensive, but I guarantee that you wouldn’t have to worry about it being strong enough to support your weight.

Wow I would think it would take even longer to make 1000 splices than it would to make 1000 knots. Would make a really cool hammock though. There was someone on the forum that made their own hammock by weaving but i can't remember who it was. I'll do some searches and post my findings.

Also, DG has a "hard" finish, which I would imagine would be uncomfortable. Some nice, fuzzy polyester would be more like it, imo.

Well at the moment I'm not looking into any material that is remotely "high grade" as this is my first attempt and will very likely not be pretty ;)
How, by the way, can you splice a braided rope? Isn't it hardly possible to stretch a hole in it? Anyway. Weaving may be a good option too, though my intuition says that it will buckle and malform when used. Unless done right, you might just push a large loop in the weaved net if you happen to support your whole weight on a single elbow or something... Or am I just acting paranoid towards weaving for dummies?
Once I remember the credentials to my bank account I'll probably buy the 500m spool of 1.5mm navy blue rope from this webshop. Cheap, and should be enough.

I stumbled acros that website too, but couldn't really fall in love with the loose weaving. It looks like you could wrangle your arm right through. I do like the pictures of Steene's hammock, that's about exactly the shape i'm going for. What is the knot he uses by the way? The picture isn't too clear but looks like a sheet bend, not shure how that works out.
Probably depends on the tightness of the weave, but I had the same fear with my Mayan, but it's never happened. I do sometimes get a toe caught in it and pull the strings making a bigger hole, but a quick shake rearranges everything exactly how it was before.
So my intuition is probably both correct, and practically not a problem at all. Haha!

I have never had any issues like the ones you fear for use in a Mayan hammock. Then again... I have never made my own Mayan either.
