    Long separable zipper

    Hi everyone,

I am looking at upgrading my hammock setup with a DIY model. I would like to do a zipper removable bugnet/nylon cover (one or the other on the hammock at any given time). I am having a little trouble sourcing the zipper that I need. I am thinking it will take at least 240", if not more. All I have been able to find is this:

    120" #10 Black
    http://www.csctextiles.com/Zpr-03.htm

    264" #5 White
    http://www.beaconfabric.com/vindex.html?cat20.htm

I'd really like something at least 240", #5, and black, although that sencond option isn't a terrible compromise.

    Anybody have any ideas?

You might try someplace like Seattle Fabrics or Outdoor Wilderness. Fabrics. They should sell zippers by the inch. And should be able to fix you up with what you need.

I have taken a look at those spots, but the only separating zippers they have are the length needed for coats. The by the yard bulk zippers cannot be made into a separating zipper. The only long separating ones I found were in the links above. I know I can go with the white #5 but I was really hoping to find some in black.

Most fabric stores (locally joann/hancock) stock a 110" sleeping bag zipper that is separable. The ones around here run about 15$ or so.

I know it's a stretch, but couldn't you use 2-120" zippers. Have them zip towards each other in the middle. I know it gives you a weight hit, and an extra step, but you could get in the hammock without having to unzip 3/4 of the netting.

I used a 110" sleeping bag zip from JoAnn's on my diy hammock. With 2 zips as suggested and some velcro at the points where the hammock and suspension meet, it would work.
Do a full zip on each side with velcro at the peaks.

Getting a zipper to make the turn/radius at the peak may be tough anyways.
Possibly use fabric triangles at the hammock peak to smooth the transition?

The best approach is to use 2 zippers (one on each side). To use one will be very dificult to zip at the gathered ends of the hammock.

2QZQ convert allot of HH hammocks to have a removable bugnet and if you visit their web site, click on Hennessy zipper mods and you can see how they do that. Mod 4 is what you probably want to do in your application.

Actually they can ... stick to coil zippers and buy the pulls separately and the zipper by the bulk. That's what I did to make my DIY Jerry5 hammock

Zippers, pulls and what-not can be purchase from Quest Outfitters ... good people, helpful and I highly reccmd them.
