Howdy from the deep south!

Hello all, from Birmingham, Alabama

Once upon a time, I was an avid hiker, climber, backpacker, camper. My youth gave way to middle age, and I was always "too busy" to keep up my outdoor life and I grew soft and pale.

Now in my late-middle years

I am getting back into hiking and backpacking. Taking it slow, I have been trying to condition myself and I have also been slowly trying to accumulate equipment since all my old stuff was lost and/or disintegrated.

I am here because I am intrigued with the hammock idea. Back in the day, of course, I slept on pads in a tent and fought with tree roots and rocks and a hammock seems like a great idea, especially the kind that allows you to sleep relatively flat.

I will probably be backpacking solo, although I have a 10-year old that has a little bit of interest in hiking (but mostly complaining). Since I will mostly be by myself, I thought a hammock would be a better / lighter approach.

Seems as though the Hennessy hammock is a pretty good one, at a reasonable price, but I am open to any other suggestions of hammocks that are in the $100-$150 range, including fly..

Years ago I spent some time in the woods around Phenix City Alabama - you all sure have a lot of places to hang!

Welcome to HF from another Bama hanger. I am over in Gadsden and there are may hangers in the area. Sometime when the weather cools off, late Sept. early Oct., there will be some hangs planned and you should come and check them out.

For the hammock in your price range definitly check out the hammocks from http://www.mosquitohammock.com/. I have not hung in one, but they have good reviews.

Hammock, regardless of brand, is the way to go!

On your other gear... (warning shameless plug ahead!). Alabama Outdoors is having a HUGE 40% off sale and it covers about 90% of the gear!

If you come by the Homewood location, say hi to the crazy red head! (that'd be me!)

Greetings from Alabaster, Alabama. Have slept in a hammock during my troop's campouts over the last 5 months, I can say that hammock camping is definitely the most comfortable camping experience I've had.

As for the 10-year-old, I understand. My 13-year-old son didn't embrace camping until he entered Boy Scouts at age 11. He really enjoys it now (when it isn't too hot or too cold and there aren't too many bugs and it doesn't rain...)

And I like my Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro (~$60) and Hennessey Hammock Hex Fly (~$60). Had to get the Pro because I wanted the 400-lb rating (I bump 250 and wanted a little safety margin).

Thanks cuffs, I am in Pelham, there's a store down here... are they having the same sale? Unfortunately broke right now due to kitchen remodel
