I don't know if it's too early to shoot this out there, but I'm thinking Fall already.
At the last Northern Hang there seemed to be some interest in having a fall canoe outing. I'm proposing a tentative date of Oct 8-13. Early Oct in the U.P. is beautiful: no bugs, fewer people, crisp air, etc... But winter comes early there sometimes; I've been there during that time frame and seen snow. You'll have to be prepared for hardy cool weather paddling.
I'm think of the Sylvania Wilderness since it is easy to access, and there are lots of places to portage to and explore that are not too difficult. Bass fishing is outstanding (catch and release only). The park is officially "off-season" at that time and the campsites are available on a first-come registration basis. (The competition is also reduced, compared to the summer when they are usually booked)

I'm going to be in central Wisconsin for a medical conference Oct6-8, so I'm already half way there. We would need to register for several sites since there is a 6 person limit per site. Best if we could clinch them on Thursday to get adjacent sites (I'm thinking Loon Lake) or sites across the lake from each other.
