I don't think that a diamond knot would work as well in this instance. The pressure exerted on a stopper knot is entirely different from what we're looking at here.

A triple fisherman's bend is the recommended knot for this app., but with the combination of the heat "whipping" and the shrink tube to provide traction, this could be exactly what you say:a quick and easy way to make a loop. Did you think this up yourself? Have you tested the load bearing ability?

I'm with boris... What are the benifits of this method vs splicing. Does this mean I should just tie my own loop vs buy any spliced loops for my hammock ends??

I concede to the knot experts about the over hand knot. I still use Velcro shoes. The last thing I want to do is start a knot controversy. It wasn't the knot that I was trying to highlight. I'm gonna pull the vid and make a new one with double sheet bend. I just wanted to get through my entire life without saying "double sheet bend". That method has held in my pull test of over 900 pounds but there are certainly better knots. If you can make a spliced loop, you don’t need my advice.

hmmm... It never even crossed my mind that somebody might find it easier to tie a knot than to just splice it in. For that matter, the "hard" part of doing a spliced loop is the bury at the end. You could use the shrink tube for that and still have the strength of something very similar to a locked brummel.

2 things that I have noticed with using the balled ends of amsteel and the heat shrink tubing.

1. Over time the balled ends of amsteel tend to shred out and you lose the ball.
2. Heat shrink tubing can and will slip on amsteel with time.

That's been my experience anyway. We experimented with using super glue under the heat shrink tubing to keep it in place. Even the super glue eventually let go of the amsteel and the tubing slipped.

That Samthane coating Samson rope uses is slippery stuff. It holds well Samthane to Samthane, but everything else slips.

Would it make more sense to just splice the amsteel like normal to make a solid loop. Before actually splicing the amsteel slide a piece of the heat shrink tubing onto the amsteel. Then splice like normal and heat shrink the tubing over the splice. This could be added to the stiched splice. You would think that either way it would improve something that already works very well.
