been thinking about that, driven in no small part by the pictures of yours!

The down-side of a bivy is that my face and sometimes my arms (depending on how I sleep) wouldn't benefit from it. The upside is that I can try it soon without sewing.

    You used untreated rip-stop, 1.1 oz ?

I used 1.9 DWR ripstop from Ed Speer. Fairly sure it's DWR. 1.1 oz. would work well too imo.

My thought is to make a cover and under cover pair, but have the top cover attach more or less flat across the hammock sides without going over the ridgeline.

Also it wouldn't cover my head. While its not as "closed" it also has a much smaller volume of air to deal with keeping warm.

I like that design. Would you wear a balaclava or hood in extremely cold temps?

Yep... a hood in very cold temperatures... I already do and have done while being a ground dweller down to -30. So I know what I can wear to keep that part warm.

Take a look at Risk's travelpod, if you haven't seen it already. Is this similar to what you envisioned?

Not really... Its a bag that goes over the WHOLE thing... I'm talking about more like a "top"only for the hammock, that just ends at my shoulder position. I envision it being "inside" any bug screen if you have one.

The bottom half would be a separate piece and attach more like an underquilt.

I guess I have to make a sketch...

Sorry, I'm a visual person. I'm thinking of some sort of loose "papoose" style, without the over the head part (and horizontal, obviously) .

along the lines of what I'd been thinking about for the bridge hammock. Having nice well-defined ringed corners makes a lot of things easy. So a lower weather shield from corner to corner creates dead air (around a quilt) below. The top cover is a little more complicated because it needs to go at least as low as the the lowest point in the suspension, but the natural attachment points are higher (the corners). Would want venting of some kind near the head.

In terms of air to be heated, with the geometry of the bridge it really is
more like a narrow one-man tent, than a Risk-style bivy.

And by the way Rapt (referring to a comment you once made about the bridge hammock), I've found it is easy (and comfortable) to swing sitting in the bridge, oriented 90 degress from the long edge. You've seen some pictures of people just sitting in the bridge by now. What is even cooler is to bring up your legs and cross them, so now you've got your back supported by the hammock and webbing behind, and the bottom of your crossed legs pushing up against the webbing on the other side. And swing away. Quite comfortable, although it imagine it looks pretty odd.

Sounds like a top quilt and bottom quilt to me.... or... for the uninsulated types, the old Weather Shield Set ( watch for a come back soon ...
