Anyone tried using golf Tees as toggles?
Anyone tried using golf Tees as toggles?

I would think they would break too easily. The wooden ones at least.
But as with golf I would end up in the woods so maybe it isn't so bad.
I tried one. The taper on the tee was too severe, so it tended to slip out of the marlinspike hitch if I wasn't very careful. A longer or less-tapered tee might work better though.

Decided to try anyway. Looks like it has potential, held my weight in both configurations:
Capture toggle
Spike hitch
I got this idea from two separate things. Last trip up in the Smokys my tree strap was long enough to get around the big tree I wanted to use but not enough slack was left for the spike hitch. I decided to sacrifice about 1/2" of length to put a capture on the end. Then Saturday I was making some new arrow stakes using arrow shafts and hardwood golf Tees and got the idea to try Tees with the heads cut off. Both straps and Tees are only 1.45 ounces each. More grams lost off the sub pound hammock.
How about sticks found ... zero grams.

The capture loop on the end of my straps is Very VERY small. I'd rather not chance finding a couple of sticks small enough and sturdy enough for the toggles. Besides, alone these two toggles are 1 gram.
I'd just be a bit leary of T's myself ... better to go with the aluminum shafts ... but that's just me

They may fail. Only one way to find out, and fortunately it involves sleeping in hammocks and hiking - two of my favorite things.

I'l remember not to hang over rocks or sticks. Lucky for me I like low hangs anyway - not so far to fall. Come to think of it, that may be why I started liking low hangs in the first place: too many hard landings while tinkering.
