    Down vest as underquilt?

I just had a thought...I do not have an under quilt, but I do have a northface down vest. has anyone ever rigged up a pocket to use a vest as an under quilt?

No, but some have used their down vest to enclose the foot end of their hammock when using a 3/4 or 2/3 UQ

I have a Penfield down/pertex gilet/vest really warm and very compressable. It occured to me some time ago to do just this make it into a piece of multi tasking valued gear.As you say a pocket is a good idea rather than trying to make a suspension system succeed on something with less coversge than a full size underquilt. So I say if its a budget thing or one wants to travel lite give it a try.I would make the pocket from a material that sags and stretches though for example no seeum netting ,obviously its breathable and light ,stretches well don't want to compress that down now.Let us know how it goes with pics.

You can either use it to enclose the foot of your hammock, same as I do with me kilt...

or, you can use it as an insert inside another UQ.

I'm about to make a down vest shell, using Insultex and nylon. The insulated shell and the down vest, together, should be enough additional insulation to extend any UQ significantly!

This idea may only be suitable for the warmer months 2 - 3 season depends on your location etc.

Personally, I'd rather have my down vest in the hammock with me, either as a pillow or an extra layer of insulation on upper body top (you can wear it backwards, opening in the back). Also nice to have it handy to put on when "watering the trees" or first thing in the morning while you're making coffee. Just a preference.

I did exactly this a year ago with a down jacket. Works fine. I posted a thread about it.
It is only a half uq by normal standards, covers from my shoulders to my hiney. With my legs being in a topquilt, it has worked well.

And I found the thread I did. (note to self: don't make so many entries...)
    gargoyle uq/coat.

I'm not sure how well a vest will work? The holes for the sleeves may pose a problem, drafts.
With my coat I pull the sleeves inside. ymmv. hyouq.

Hey Gargoyle, now I just need to find a jacket that is differential cut so even I can use it as an UQ.

Actually I think the pockets on a Clark hammock are essentially the same thing as what you are asking. I don't see why it wouldn't work - but I do think there would be other and perhaps better options out there. JustJeff has made a downhammock which is a big pillow of down under his hammock.

I was going to point you to Gargoyle's thread, but he beat me to it.
