It's a tool, very useful at times, but not critical for some. I happen to be one that needs it all the time & one that feels "a few inches can make all the difference". I also really like hanging stuff from my ridgeline: net bag for "possibles", mini flashlight for "call of nature", a book, when packing up my pillow mini biners to the ridgeline so I don't loose it.
Kind of like asking two craftsmen "Is a 3/4" wrench an important tool for you?" The mechanic will answer a resounding "YES" the woodworker, "Not so much!"
At a get together of 40 hangers you will see 40 different set ups. Some with ridge lines, some without.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.
I have one. Most important reason is to keep the bug net off of me. Of course I could use smaller cord than amsteel for it...but I had plenty of amsteel so it's what I used.
Secondmost important for me is to hang stuff off of it, like others have mentioned.
I don't use it so much for setting the sag, but when learning to hang the hammock, it's a very useful thing to have at least until you find what you like and can set that sag consistently.
I use TeeDee's modular single line suspension system in which the SRL is an integral part and necessary since it would not be a single line system without it. I find it easier to hang the single line suspension system and then to hang the hammock from that. So the SRL is needed for more than setting the sag angle in this system.
I like the single structural ridge line, no fiddle facter it hangs the same way every time, I even rigged one for my bridge, tho that isn't a necessity, gnome
So I've been hammock camping for years now, but just recently found your site. (like....yesterday)
What is the point of the SRL? Could you point me to a youtube vid?

Use an adjustable ridgeline more for hanging gear, bugnet use but could go without it. Depending on type of hammock, I set up hammock first then adjust ridgeline to fit accordingly. To each his own as they say...Bush
