    Under/over quilt. Which goes where?

    Greetings,

I already own the No Sniveller (9.5 oz fill) and I am considering a quilt for winter use. If I were to buy the Old Rag Mountain (15 oz fill), which quilt would you use for the top and which for the under quilt? Where do you need more insulation, under or over the hammock assuming that I can wear more clothing as needed?

I would use the ORM as an under quilt and the NS as a top quilt. It's a lot easier to add clothing than it is to add insulation underneath you, especially if it's the middle of the night and freezing outside.

In my limited experience, more under you than over you.

Last night it got to about 40, I had my underquilt in place, mostly slept next to my over quilt. Had the underquilt not been there, the overquilt would have been nearly useless. At the Mt Rogers hang out (5 degrees, 50+ MPH wind gusts) I also felt the important insulation was what was under me not what was on top.

Thank you. That is what I expected but it is good to seek the wisdom of the forum. It saves me a lot of cold nights of trial and error.

Funny... Without actually trying the different options I'd have said more on top than on bottom.... (provided there's actually SOME on the bottom).

Now I'm going to have to experiment... This weekend they're calling for temps in the low 30's...

What he said. I've taken ny NS to 10 degrees on top supplemented with layers of clothing.

This is what I think also, but it is just a gut feeling, no facts. Maybe the under/over quilts experts will chime in.

I'm not any kind of 'expert', but I do very much agree with what has been said above; bottom insulation is more important.

When laying in a hammock, you are essentially taking half of your body's surface and compressing it against a porous surface with a high breathability factor. That dissipates your body heat quickly when there is any kind of air movement.

If I had to go through a cold night in a hammock with only one quilt, I would certainly use it for bottom insulation.... JMO
