Looking forward to a trip report!
I tried to summit Katahdin by climbing Abol Ridge back in '02 and didn't make it to the top. It was late May and there was still snow on Knife's Edge. After the 2nd time I got rained on and started getting hypothermic I turned around. I guess I was within 100-200ft from the top but was running out of daylight.
I will go back and do that one day!
    Good luck!
    Maine is special.

Yeah, I'm finishing my thru-hike. Getting back on in Gorham where I got off last month. I'm meeting a friend that I hiked most of the trail with in Monson. He's also a fellow hanger new to the forum. If you don't live far from there and have some free time you should meet up with us. Dutch will be heading up that way as well to summit with me.

Will the leaves have started to change at that time, or is it too early for that?
