    starting out

    Hello,

I had back surgery a few years ago and have sleep apnea. My doctor suggested that I look into getting a hammock as it might help relieve my pain and help out with the sleep apnea. So I find myself browsing the internet and finding a variety of types, brands and opinions... most of which seem to differ. So I come here, hoping that someone would have some advice. So my stats:

I am 6'3" tall and weigh 390 pounds(think offensive lineman).
I not claustrophobic and will be using the Hammock primarily indoors as an every night bed. I have a room that can be used as a part-time hammock room measuring 20 feet by 15 feet, but it is also the family room so a large stand is not feasible but two independent stands/poles that could be stored in a closet or mounted/hidden somehow would be fine.

What I'm looking for are idea's on the type of hammock that would be possible for a man of my size as well as one that will comfortably sleep an individual every night. I also need to know how on earth I am going to hang the thing so that I will not crush my twin children or any of the pets! Any info or direction you could point me in would be greatly appreciated!

Are you a candidate for a CPAP machine to help with your sleep apnea?
An ENO double nest is a comfortable option that would support you.

If you get a Rx for that would it make all your gear deductible as a medical expense?

If so, I'd love to get an appointment with your doc.

Seriously - if your doctor recommended it, it's at least worth a call to your insurance to see if they can cover it. Not likely, but all they can do is tell you "no!"

Oh man...my back is hurting already. I better start looking for doctors...

There are many hammocks that will fit someone your size. Since you don't need a bug net inside, the ENO Doublenest is a great place to start. Rated for 400 lbs and not too expensive. For a bit more, you can get a double layer Warbonnet Traveler rated to 375, so you can put insulation between the layers. It would probably hold 390 without problems. Or you could call him to see if he'll add an extra layer to it.

If you want a Hennessy-style bottom entry, you could always cut off the bug net and just use the bottom entry anyway. My wife likes the Hennessy entry better than other styles b/c it feels more stable to her...you might want to try a HH yourself.

IMPORTANT - be sure you read the info on hanging inside. The force that each of your hammock lines can exert onto your walls can easily be 3x your body weight if you're not careful...that means you need to consider breaking strength for your cords, the hardware you put into your walls, and the walls' ability to hold you up without buckling. If you hang so your supports are 30 degrees or more below horizontal before you get in, and you spread the force over several studs, you can probably make it work. Depends on your home's construction, obviously.

Good luck with your decision, and let us know how it turns out!

Oh - and welcome to HF!

Give Hammock Bliss triple wide a look.

Your best bet it to speak with Cannibal. He is a moderator here and sleeps in hammocks full time. I would think for every night use indoors and Mayan or Brazilian hammock would be the way to go. Given someone of your size, I also think a dual layer hammock would be the way to go, they stretch less than single layers. I weight about 150 less than you do and found the ENO double nest problematic as it swallowed me pretty deep in the hammock and that made getting out of the hammock somewhat challenging.

If you are of the DIY persuasion, I would look at gettting some polyester taffeta fabric and make yourself a simple gathered end hammock with 2 layers. Polyester doesn't stretch to the same degree as nylon (almost no stretch). As for hanging it, I would look at 1/8th Amsteel due to its 2500 lb breaking strength and light weigh. Ceiling mount would be your best bet and hanging on the same ceiling joist would be the best as the force generate would be in compression on the joist. I have not suggestions for what to use as mounting hardware though.

Good Luck and that is one enlightened doctor of yours.

    Cheers.

    Brian
