Welcome,
I am also a scouter from Asheboro, NC.
This is the greatest site ever to learn and explore hammock camping at its best.
Congrats! My last tent experience was the same, Ga in July on top of Blue Mt just absolutely miserable with the heat. I think I didn't start hiking until 11am the next day just due to sleeping late and then moving so slow. Had been gathering info on hammocks and decided right then and there I was taking the plunge.
For a pillow, I find that I don't need much, but need something under my neck at least if not my head. I have one of the Thermarest stuff sacks that is lined with fleece so you can stuff it with just the right amount of clothing for a pillow. I find my down vest is perfect for stuffing in it for a pillow so I take it regardless of summer temps.
Welcome from Alamance!
