Man that sucks. Look on the bright side, at least nothing caught fire and you are unharmed. Your next design will certainly build on the shortcomings of this one. It's an ambitious project to begin with, so stick with it.

this guy wants to convert me to sleeping in a fox hole and I'm trying to convert him to a hammock.. maybe i'll just dig a trench and hang my hammock on top of it

anyhow if trenching is an option you might try that

well i hope you can convert him to a hammock. trenching, much less fox holing just don't fit the leave no trace line of thinking.
besides, i wouldn't want to be in a fox hole when it's raining
I too will something make and joy in it's making

    Good Decisions come from Experience
A lot of Experience comes from Bad Decisions.

Ok, that's a hokey quote, but it keeps me going in the middle of a lot of my 'Experiences'. A lot of the reasons I do some of the camping/backpacking/hanging things I do is memories of how much it hurt/was miserable when I did this stuff back in the day. The folks are right who say that the version you end up with will be superior because of what you went though with this one, and the vow of 'never going to go through THAT again'.
