sandykayak: "If the vario is now $149, thats a huge increase."
The Vario (except if one was lucky enough to get the few Varios from hammocks.com before they had Dubose make knock-offs) have always been $149. No price increase.

Smokebait, this's a great idea. Smoke deserves all the credit; he Pm'ed me about the fact that, if used outdoors, the upright on the Vario/Dubose could catch water. That is, the rubber gasket that is already on the uprights that join the moveable piece to the bottom bracket curved piece does not have a perfectly tight seal. In rain, the bottom would collect water.
His solution: Slip Joint Washers, part # 50915K, by Keeney Manuf. 2 rubber washers, size 1 1/4 inch, sold at Lowe's for $2.38 to a pair. They're only in red, like the ones pictured below. They are in the plumbing section.(note: they sell loads of 1 1/2 inch washers, but those are too large for the Vario--1.25 inches fits ideally).
I stopped into Lowe's from Smoke's advice, and got two pairs (one for each of my stands) and they are sublime. They went on easily, just pull out the upright, slide on, put back upright, and roll down to the current black gaskets for a tight seal. Will stop water rolling.
I thought of alternative, which is to cut into a section of about 6 inches an old bicycle innertube. Slide it condom-style over one piece, put other back into it, and then roll it completely over the joint. I did not try it, just thought of it. Likely would be ultimate water-tightness, but cannot take apart the uprights as easily. With Smokebait's method, the uprights can be removed without moving the red washers.
This is highly recommended for stand owners who will use the device in the rain. Thank you, Smoke, for being spot on in your recommendation.
Great write up CK1! You said it better than I ever could have. This was the only trip down the Lowe's plumbing aisle that I've ever enjoyed
Smokebait—
I received my order from whoopieslings.com, smokebait's company, yesterday.
I got some All-In Ones that look ideal, love the camo straps, and they’ll serve me well on my Hennessy. I appreciate your linking me the video on the installation. Looks pretty straightforward. Your tying and ropework looks superb, Smoke.
For the Vario, I got a ridge line and S biners from smokebait. I love it, with the closed loops on the ends and the two prussic knots. I immediately strung it across my Vario and it is fabulous. On the fixed end, I went over one end and down to the upright knob (took off the knob, put the loop on it, then re-screwed in the knob), so very secure. On the non-fixed end, I went over the upright knob and it was the ideal length, and I attached an 8 lb weight (my binocular case weighs about that) and man, it works like a charm! I them put my 2qZq ridge line organizer on it, my wrist watch (so I can see the time when I look up) and it’s ideal. I took an S-biner and attached it to the prussic knot and put a small LED light on it.
I hang in the Vario daily, so it’s really something I will use all the time.
Thanks so much, Smokebait Stu.
I post it here so that anyone wanting a "ready to go" ridgeline for the Vario 9or any hammock) can order one from whoopieslings.com. Also, it is to tell everyone that JustJeff's and Stoikurt's method of hanging a weight off the ridgeline to keep the line taught even when the Vario arms move inward during a hammock lay works like a charm! A real Rube Goldberg device solution to the problem.

Thanks back at ya CK1 for all you've done here at HF. With the rain that's coming up from the south, hopefully you be nice and dry under that tarp now
resurrecting an older thread. I like the looks of this stand. I've been wanting to hang my Byer Amazonas hammock in the house, but I haven't wanted to drill eye bolts into the studs anywhere. The stand ought to work out great.
mtnbikernate--yes, this Vario ought to work for you. Very versatile.
Here's photos of mine on another thread, all tricked out.

It fits well, and tarp line works great with a one gallon milk jug weight on it to keep it tight when I get in the stand. Someone asked if it would accept a WBBB, and the answer is "yes".
Here is a Byers Vario for $99 shipped, for those interested
