I hit the ground but didn't break anything

Just a bit of a heads up, even though I'm not completely certain what happened.

I hit the ground without breaking anything on me or the hammock setup. Didn't roll out or flip over either.

I use amsteel whoopie slings with a toggle in a marlin spike hitch. It appears that the toggle twisted and slipped through the loop on the sling. Maybe because of the angle of the tree? It was leaning out over the water. It's the only way I can see it happening, but that's never happened to me before.

Just wanted to mention this and see if anyone else has ever had that happen. It happened within 30 seconds of getting in, I just picked it up and re-attached then napped for about an hour with no problems.

I've seen my toggles twist slightly, but never thought about it being an issue until now. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm headed down your way on Saturday for a paddle down the Coosa. Looking forward to it.

Good thing you weren't hanging higher off the ground.

Sure glad you didn't break anything. Sounds like a freak accident, and I guess no harm done?

Yep, that's on one of the islands just past the first set of rapids on the Coosa. I'm headed out of town, but if things change I may be out there with you

I wonder if the whoopie sling being in back of the knot caused it. I've always put mine on the knot, and when I get into the hammock the first time it will sink into the knot.
It's kinda like a tree that grows around a piece of barbed wire after many years. That's about the best analogy I can think of. But it's never caused the Amsteel to slip off. Just a thought.

I'll just toss this out there ... only thing I can think that would cause it. Sometimes if you don't get it on properly ... or nice and snug ... when you're hooking the opposite side the whoopie can slip around the attachment point. I've had them plop off before while setting them up when that happens. Maybe yours didn't move enough to fall off until after you got in the hammock. Just a theory ... no way to prove it.

That said ... makes a heck of an argument for the Dutch Biner!

At 32 seconds into the video, as HB wrote, the whoopie is hung incorrectly. When you rehung, at 103 seconds, you did it correctly.

Since it happened 30 seconds after set-up I suspect the same as Hawk-eye. In the past I have set up one side and while setting up the other one the toggle or whoopie actually slipped off. When there is no weight on the first toggle, the motion of the setting up the second one could move the first toggle or move the whoopie into a postion have could caused it not to hook on properly. Just another theory. Glad you were not hurt.
