Thanks everybody. Rev, I appreciate your detailed explanation which is largely beyond me. I'll keep trying to adjust my top tension and see if that helps.

Regarding my purchase of a new machine my point was that my friend has one that we have never had a single problem from. Surely the same model would act the same way, no?

Have you ever had your friend take a look at your machine? You might even try to look locally for a repair shop, bring in your machine and ask them if it is the machine or the user. They might just do that for free. The repair shop where I live gives free lessons with every machine they sell and a yearly tune-up as well.

    Just a thought.

If you have access to an experienced sewer (mom, aunt, friend, neighbor) you might ask them to come and see the problem in operation, and then show them this thread-(oops, no pun intended) so they can translate for you...Not sure what else I can add in the way of helpfulness, KM

IMO that's like assuming that every new/used Ford (insert model name here) would be the same in terms of performance and quality.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Just to clarify the obvious... the pic I posted was merely notional, to confirm the general area of the originally posted symptom. Lots of helpful insights from you experts!

I did ask my MIL for help. She's an experienced sewer. She tinkered with it for a while and couldn't get it to work consistently for her either. She decided that the problem is that I'm an idiot.

Maybe I'm missing something Rev, but I do expect two of the same make of cars to act similar with few exceptions.

Incidentally, the model I have is a Singer 1507. I inherited it from my daughter.

jbo, did you try a new needle of the proper size for the thread being used? Is the bobbin thread the same as on the spool on top?

Here's a window into my frustration with fixing this stupid thing:

When I gave up last night, I could sew no more than 6-12 inches without it hanging up. Moments ago, I got up and told my wife I was going to try some more to get it going. I made NO changes - only turned it on. I've run 40 feet of stitching with not one single hiccup.

While that sounds good, I've got no faith that the next time I turn it on it won't be back to jamming every few inches.

    Smoke.

Good question on the needle. I don't know how to size the needle for the thread. I have noticed that the eye on my buddy's needles seem to be bigger.

Crazy theory here, but when you begin a line of stitching, do you hang on to the thread tails for the first 4 or 5 stitches?
