    IX Top Quilts

    Hi all,

I'm interested in using IX material for top quilts. I see MacEntyre has a TQ available on his website that he thinks should be good to ~40.

Does anyone have any experience with this quilt, or similar ones? How does IX work in a top quilt function ... I understand that as an underquilt it's all about maintaining a small gap of air and no air flow between the inside and outside. Does the TQ work in the same way ... which is basically also the same way a down quilt works? Just reduce any air gaps around the edges?

I've been eyeing a custom Nunatak quilt rated to ~40 and ~12.5 oz ... but if I can get a $70 topquilt and save both weight and $300+ ...

One MMG IX TQ has been used in relatively cold weather so far... a fellow took his new IX TopQuilt and IX UnderQuilt to 11,000 ft in Utah recently, and hung in 35*F. He said his TQ did well. No one else has reported using a Molly Mac Gear IX TQ in temps as low as 35*F. Unfortunately, he was not able to get his IX UnderQuilt hung right, but he got some pointers from me and said he will try again soon.

The MMG IX TQ is 4' wide and has four pleats on the inner layer, to serve as InsulTubes and to make for a differential cut. The footbox is long and tapered, with a drawstring closure allowing you to adjust how it is ventilated.

Keep in mind that, like all MMG IX products, the IX TQ can be used to complement other TQs. As an outer layer, it will extend the range of a down TQ significantly! You can also nest IX TQs.

So you just use it as a normal quilt, then?

Yep! It is normal and "very plain!"

How durable is IX? It looks like you could poke a hole or tear it easily.

Yes! The pattern for it came from the full size Universal IX UQ, which was developed for the WBBB.

It is durable, and washable. If you treat it rough, it will chafe. Because it is quilted, it is easy to patch. The outer covering on the Baby Orca is good, because you can put it on the ground without small twigs or leaves sticking to the IX.

    Outer shell?

Is the TQ covered with some type of shell, or is it just the insulation?

    It is not covered.

It can be covered, but that would add significantly to the cost.

    Images?

Thanks for the quick response. Are there any photos or videos out there that show the TQ? My searching hasn't found any.
