    WalMart greyish ripstop

back when WM carried fabric i spied some greyish ripstop in the bargain rack and bought almost all of it, definitly enough for a double layer hammock (im 300lbs) it is definitly not silnylon (not slippery at all), what tests can i do to see if it is suitable for a hammock? i dont think it is coated. but maybe it has DWR? can that be removed by washing?

    Thanks gurus!

Is it breathable? Hold the fabric up to your mouth tightly and try to blow thru it.
Is it waterproof? Hold some fabric in your hands under the faucet to see if water can pass thru or not. If it holds water and is not breathable it won't work "well" for a hammock.
You can use it, its just not the best choice IMO.

I've got bunches of that stuff and I wouldn't hesitate to make a double layer out of it if I wanted one. I've stuck to making quilts out of it.

It's dwr so no problems with breathability.

I've got a single layer hanging right now, made from what sounds like the same material. Works fine. Go for it.

a double layer of the same stuff was my plan too. 60" plus 9" sewed to each side..11 feet long. that was my plan. my sewing machine might be changing my plans!

Spent three days on DIY Walmart Ripstop this weekend, no problems at all for my weight of 180#... Paid $1.50/yd, little over $5 w/ tax.... Not a bad deal for first hammock... OH... just remember to hot knife ends if you don't want it getting all fuzzy... Unless you plan to hem the edges...

three days ago I was at Wal-Mart and found a full bolt of this stuff. I went home and decided that the following day I would go buy it all. I went back and the whole thing was gone. I figure someone on Hammock Forums shops at the Alcoa, TN Wal-Mart.

I have made two double layer hammocks with the same stuff.

The grey stuff you are talking about is light, airy and stretchy, but works well and makes for a comfy hammock.

I have several different colors of the ripstop I have picked up from various Wal Marts. Some of it is a little heavier and less stretchy. All work well for hammocks. My girlfriend is out right now browsing thrift shops for old sleeping bags I can cannibalize zippers from and make UQs with.

All I need to make some WBBB clones with is zippers. When I get those I'll be pumping out a couple of clones. I've only got about 40yds of the ripstop lol.
