    Rectangular Underquilt

I'm prepared to make a first attempt at an underquilt, and was wondering if a simple rectangle shaped quilt can be efficient and free of air gaps. It seems alot easier for a first try, but i'll use a darted design if the rectangle is going to be just a waste of time.

If it's going to be a dedicated underquilt, you're going to want it to be darted eventually. Just makes life easier. I say go whole hog! Do it once, instead of twice

You can get a standard rectangular UQ to fit welll, but I agree with the above...if it's going to be a dedicated UQ, it's very simple to add darts and differential baffles, and you'll be glad you did.

When I made mine I put a ccf pad in the hammock and laid firewood in the hammock to around my weight. Then fit and pinned my UQ ..... had two darts per end.
    Fits like an old boot.

I've made a couple of rectangular ones and been very satisfied. Got two more to make and they'll be rectangular too. I don't feel the need to dart.

Although I have never DIY UQ
I would have to agree with our friend . . .

    . . . Also I had to quote so I could say

With the darts you would be "Snug as a Shug in a Rug".

Alright, so I decided on one dart per end and winged it! This is the first project I've done that required sewing. Being a prototype, I used some walmart materials as to not break the bank on a potential disaster. All in all, I think it came out alright, but on the real deal I'm going to not cut corners and add some darts.

It ended up to be about 1lb12oz in the stuff sack.

Looks great...I wing most of my projects. Just a little planning and they come out ok.

Can't wait to hear about your field results.

I have one of those stuff sacks. You could probably shave a good bit of weight by making your own sack for the quilt.

Quilt looks good though! I have made a lot projects on my sewing machine and still havent made an UQ though.
