Noob - What size UQ? 3/4 or Full?

    Howdy,

Weight is not a big issue for me as I usually motorcycle camp (old injuries prevent much hiking), but I live in AZ where the weather goes to extremes. Not unusual to see day temps in the 80's and night temps in the 30's in the mountains.

I "think" I would like a full UQ but I am concerned about overheating. I tend to be a fetal position sleeper. Will I be able to get away with a UQ like a Yeti? I really don't want to take an extra pad with me as they don't fit well into my packing schema.

Any advice from some more experienced folk?

    Thanks!

    -jeff

hey bud if weight is not a problem and you are worried about the cold then you could go with a full, and if you overheat all you need to do is pull the quilt up and that will make an air gap near the head area and cool you off, I have a3/4 yetti and it works out great, but when it gets cold I will use a pad on my feet area to keep that ares warm. That's the only drawback with a 3/4 size. There is not much weight difference between the two but there is more bulk which takes up space in the pack and space is precious in the pack

I've convert from full to 3/4 uq. Only a 3 season camper & short (5'4"). For +20*F nights the partial uq work fine. Colder than the low 50*F I need a foot pad. Right now the "pad" is whatever soft gear I'm hauling. For me partials uq are easier to "vent" from within the hammock. That along with bit lighter weight and less pack volume are the primary reasons for the conversion.

Ive never used a full length UQ but love my 3/4 UQ. I orginally wanted a full length as well but after talking to Stormcrow and reading a bit found that a 3/4 was cheaper, lighter and just as warm. The only disadvantage (if you even consider this a disadvantage some would other would not) you need to carry a CCF pad to keep feet warm. In my case I bring a sit pad in both summer and winter so im covered on that end.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

I sleep fetal position often too and both the 2/3 Winter Yeti and 3/4 Crowsnest are plenty warm all over. I have used a full length once, but was too green to hammocking to make any good judgments. I really like my partial UQs, though, and don't see any reason a partial would be inferior to a full-length.
oldgringo's reply to my worrying about owning extra hammocks:

How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?

As a long distance cycle rider, I see volume more an issue than weight...FWIW a full length UQ packs smaller than fractional UQ and pad combinations....

    Similar question....

I am purely a car camper. I will not backpack ever. Weight will never be an issue and while less volume would be nice, it would rank at the very bottom of what might be important to consider. Comfort is at the top of my list.

I have a Blackbird and am pretty much a midget at 5'6", but very wide at the shoulders.

I will not be going into the extremes like a lot of you... upper 30s is pretty much it and that would be an odd, cold night for me.

There are so many options out there and I have been doing a lot of reading, but I can not for the life of me figure out the answer to this question.... 2/3, 3/4, or full length?

I was pretty much thinking full length for my situation (weight/volume not being an issue), but saw some posts about venting issues with midgets like me.

As a noob who is also looking into the possibility of an UQ, I'd like to ask those who use 2/3 or 3/4 quilts: how big a piece of CCF pad do you cut for your feet? My concern is that both my regular packs are UL rucksacks: a ULA Conduit, and Gossamer Gear Murmur. Each of those packs requires something to act as a frame. Typically I just throw my Zlite in there. However, if I were to carry an UQ...

I seem to be in the minority on this issue but I've always liked the full length UQ. I don't like the idea of carrying an extra pad to cover my lower legs and feet. It would also seem a small pad would have a tendency to move around more. If it's too hot I just open up the ends a bit or just tie it looser in general.

Stick the pad inside your tq deals with movement issues.
