First off, sorry for the necro-post, but I figure it's better to raise the dead than rehash things over.
I'm contemplating getting some taslan/supplex for a tarp. Would this be feasible, or would it be outrageously heavy and/or not rainproof?

    Curious,
    Acer

Ed Speer recommends supplex as a mid-weight hammock material in his book. I go 220 and don't like a lot of stretch so I want 210D (~3.5 oz/yd) stuff for my hammock body. Supplex is available in the weight. I made a prototype out of some I got from Mill End and would agree that its workable. The soft feel is nice for a hammock body. Mill End is guess work though and in searching for a reliable supplier I found that details like weight aren't always listed on line.

As for using it in a tarp, I kind of doubt that it is available in weaves that light. Anything I've run across is heavier than the 1.1oz material I'd want for a tarp. I'd also want SilNylon for a tarp and I've never seen supplex with Sil.

I have had swim trunks made from suplpex that I cut the liner out of for camp shorts. Very comfortable and dries super fast.

    I've ordered supplex from http://www.owfinc.com/
both the 4ply and the 2ply types that they sell. This material feels like the nylon that things like pants are made out of. Especially the 2ply. The 4ply is just thicker/heavyer and seems to be, at least for me, better for winter type clothes. I'm using this stuff to experiment making kilts and shorts and hiking skirts. Looks like it would work well for making a hammock but not for a tarp. It's not waterproof. Does come in a nice pink color!! Ok, it also comes in black and khaki.

Okay, thanks guys. Guess I'll keep up my search for cheap camo sil.
On a slightly related topic, I think I may have made my hammock out of sil. How can I tell?

    Thanks,
    Acer
