We are all made differently and our sleeping comfort levels vary widely from one person to the next. I would say that at 50-60 degrees you are going to want some sort of bottom quilt. For some 70 degrees might be there bottom limit. Personally I tend to sleep pretty warmly compared to quite a few others in the crowd that camp with. That being said I always have at least a 3 season under quilt with me on all outings. No matter how warm the predicted temps. If I need I have it readily at hand if not needed for insulation it becomes my pillow.

I don't know about average persons, but below about 65-70 degrees its very noticeable for me...and gets progressively uncomfortable as temperatures drop.

Thanks for all your help I think an under quilt would be almost half the weight of my pad.

Pretty much what I have...agree that you might want to look into some insulation. Welcome to the forum.

I've slept with my Exped Downmat 7 (20" wide by 2.8" thick) without any additional side insulation into the teens. If you're somewhat thin, this one it thick enough that it holds me far enough above the hammock, so the hammock material doesn't wrap around me enough to crush the insulation.

I tried this with the NeoAir at 2.5" thick and it didn't work. I think this also has to do with the firmness of the Exped, and that the baffles run in a different direction.

So I'd test it with the BA pad first...it might work for you. And if not, SPEs are very helpful as mentioned above.

My personal experience w/ the BA Insulated Air Core is that it felt noticeably cool as I laid on it in temps in the upper 40sf & even the low 50s. It got me by but it was cool enough to wake me up a few times.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
