    WBBB mod

In case anybody else is having similar issues: the rings holding the shock cord tie outs that came with my WBBB have been damaging the fabric of the hammock. I guess this happens when the hammock is put into the stuff sac. I have now detached the rings and exchanged the cord locs with another type of cord loc (same weight, in case that matters) that allows me to loop the shock cord around the tie out. Will see how it goes, but for the moment it looks as if it would solve the problem.

    Excellent mod!

I haven't noticed any damage to my hammock from the split rings I have but did notice they knot up or twist occasionally during deployment and need fiddling I'd rather not deal with.. I would imagine that removing one of the pieces in the system like you have done would help alleviate that problem as well as the one you described.

Very good - I need to find some parts!

Where do you get the cord locks you used?

    Thanks!

I got them at a German outdoor shop. They are selling these and other types of cord locs as replacements for outdoor clothing and equipment. A quick search for "cord loc" brought up this site: http://cord-lock.com/ - the type I have been using is the "bean cord lock".

Otherwise I'd try it at a shop that sells sewing materials, I guess.

i've never had anyone mention that before

it's possible that that green stuff on the rings wan't pulled from the fabric, if it was you should be able to see obvious fabric damage (check and see). there's alot of that "stuff" that gets pulled off the seams in the final checkover, it gets all over the floor and clings to everything, some possibly got snagged on the ring and has been there all along

not using anything will cause the cord itself to wear out

I have a 1.7 double layer and just checked mine. The rings are not that sharp on mine. I tried running them along the material and it did not catch. I know they are small but how about filing or sanding down the edges if they are sharp. Just a thought.

If you think that wearing out the shock cord is an issue, I'll try to find some non-split rings - or try sanding the edges (not sure if that's doable - they're tiny!).

I'm pretty sure that there was no fuzz on the rings when I got the hammock. It started to build up slowly. My split rings have quite sharp edges: when running my finger over the ring, it kind of catches on the skin. I had a quick look but fortunately couldn't find any obvious damage to the hammock fabric. The rings had not collected a lot of fuzz (see photo), and the build up was slow. I just didn't want to risk anything.

Maybe I'm packing the hammock wrong? I just squeeze it into the stuffsac without rolling or folding.

well, that "fuzz" is usually made up of very long tiny strands, i don't see how something like that could be pulled out of the fabric without being visibly snagged on it and then without showing damage afterwards. if it's the ring, you should be able to pick off the fuzz and then rub it over an inconspicuous spot of fabric and see if it's sharp enough to catch the fabric or not. the fact that you never noticed it snagged on the fabric makes me think that's not what's happening. if it does have a burr or something on the ring it might be causing it, but i'd think you'd notice it catching on the fabric now and then

i'd recommend something to replace it, small plastic ring possibly. i could probably find something around here to mail you if you want

I have not had that problem but now I will be on the lookout for it. Nice little mod, I may have to change mine out,

Is it possibly rubbing on the inside of the stuff sack?

    Just a thought?
