Looks like you had a great time other than forking out the $$$. Have to agree with you, not sure I would want to pay to carry my own gear and setup with no facilities. Too many other nice places out there (FHT, AT, Pisgah...) worth hiking were there are no fees. You seem to be a fairly confident backpacker, you should be enjoying every trip you take. Push on young man !

As others have mentioned I am in Greenville, though like Chicky my mailing address is technically Greer (pronounced Grrrr by some local residents btw). Welcome to HF and don't let your first trip keep you from giving the backpacking thing another try.

I enjoyed the video. Paris Mountain SP brings back lots of memories growing up here. I went on my first unsupervised camping trip there when I was 16 with two of my friends. That was however the only time I have ever camped there because there are so many better spots all around Greenville, most of witch do not charge a fee. I do occationally still go to Paris Mt SP to do a little day hiking because it is so close (20 minutes).

My number one suggestion is find a couple of hiking pals and / or join in on a group hang to meet some like minded folks in the area. Hiking and camping with a group is how most folks get started. If that was your first trip I am way impressed that you took off on your own to start w/ a solo trip. If that's the case no wonder the night sounds were disturbing. The other great thing about camping with others is the sharing of knowledge, tricks & for us here to see everyone else's hammock set-up.

Stick with it and hopefully we will cross paths at a hang sometime. I am hoping to make Jocassee but right now it is lookig doubtful.
