No aircraft activity that night but did hear a few power boats in the distance, my son snoring and the waves lapping on the shore line.Did you get buzzed by any Harriers
The views in the morning looking thru the Bald cypress trees along the shore line is unreal.
Not too worried about bears (or the vicous attack beavers mentioned in a different post). I have been on the lookout for the aligators in the area but have yet to officially see one here. There is a breeding pair of Ospreys (at least that's what I think they are) that have a nest at the top of a pine tree close by and around May they get very upset when you hike close by. I have seen a variety of snakes, Turkeys, Woodpeackers and Deer while hiking the area.

At the mouth of Hancock Creek, there is a rattlesnake den under a particular tree, standing on the bluff overlooking the river. Academic types visit it regularly.

I ran into a couple of little ones, maybe 5-6 footers, on the creeks leading into New River when I was at LeJeune. They found a dead 12-footer over at Stone Bay Rifle Range in 1994. But I have a feeling gators don't deal too well with the water in the Neuse River. Isn't it a touch on the salty side? I have to figure that would keep gators away.
No salt west of Oriental and Adam's Creek. The gators like to stay up in the marshy headwaters of Clubfoot Creek, Mitchel's Creek, Hancock Creek, Slocum Creek and Bryce Creek on the Trent River. During the drought in 2007, the gators came downstream to hunt otter, and watch dogs on docks.

As Shrek said, Alligators are not afraid of salt water. A friend of mine on Emerald Island has one living in her back yard. Rattlesnakes will also swim in salt water to from one barrier island to another.

What shape is the trail in? Last time I was there, there was quite a bit of deadfall on the trail and the mud was a foot deep in many areas.
