    Neusiok Trail Quick Over night

The weather finally decided to cooperated ( it cooled off some and no rain) so I decided to head out to the Neusiok Trail for a quick overnight after I got off work.

My youngest son went with me for his first overnight in a hammock. We found a place just a few feet from the river and set up amongst the bald cypress trees. It was getting dark when we got there so I set up the hammocks best I could and we climbed in for the night. Dutch clips make for a fast set up. The hang of the hammocks could have been better but we did ok.

We lucked out in that there were no bugs out and there was a breeze. As we had clear skies and no rain predicted we did not set up tarps although we took them just in case. When the stars came out I had a perfect view of the big dipper framed by two trees. Watched the stars until I fell asleep. With the wind it got a little cool about 4am so I pulled my trusty poncho liner around me and went back to sleep.

Got up about 6am, took some pictures and came home.

The Neuse River would make for a great hang spot. It was always my favorite ending to a hike, walking that beachline or the ridge just above the beach at the end of the Neusiok Trail.

Too bad I was still a grounddweller last time I was on the NT.

Lots of places to set up a hammock along the trail. I figure I will be busy for the next year or two checking out all the potenial hanging sites. Only problem is that most of them will not have the views you get hanging along the river.

Thanks for sharing the report. Nothing like a peaceful night in a hammock alongside a river to recharge the batteries.

Nice! How did your son sleep?

I don't think he liked it. Asked if wants to go again and he will not answer. I think the problem is that it was getting dark when we were setting up and I did not the hammock dialed in for him as it was his first overnight. Also explained about sleeping at an angle for a flat lay which I don't think he listened to.

On the other hand my wife is mad because her work schedule has kept her from going with me.

It's tough sometimes with the young ones. I have heard the next day that my little ones were cold, but they just didn't think to tell me when I could do something about it for them.

Ah well, maybe he'll forget the negatives and remember the positives.

I hung at 2 of the shelter sites. I might have to think about that spot on the river, next time. Did you get buzzed by any Harriers?

That's one of my favorite deer hunting areas... don't go there often, now that I sold the vessel we kept at Matthews Point.

I love the ridges with their high bluffs on the Neuse River, and the swampy ravines in between. There is a bear that lives along that stretch of the river, between Hancock Creek and the housing development at Cherry Branch.

Here's two early morning pictures taken a little west of where you hung, one looking east and the other looking west.
