I see this post is a little old, but I'm sure there are a few marine supply stores around Provo, you might be able to find some line better suited than the 550.
I ordered some Amsteel from Arrowhead Equipment, but I'm impatient. I went to the local hardware store and picked up some of this 3/8 In. x 100 Ft. Diamond-Braided Polypropylene Rope (Model # 14156 Internet # 202048173 Store SKU # 706036).
With a "working load" of 244 lbs, doesn't that equate to over a thousand pounds "breaking" strength? I'm really not sure, but it seems like some pretty substantial stuff - and the price was low too. What do ya think?
The rope I got was black with red and yellow accents.
On Harbor Freight straps, the working load is usually 1/3 of the bursting load. That is straps, not rope.
For the weekend, you can always double the rope. For strength the doubled rope is not in as tight of a curve through the knots, double roped knots are much easier to untie, and stretch is half as much. The polypro is more likely to keep stretching than to burst so that is safer than weak, low stretch cordage.
