    Hammock invasion

Just returned from a 3-day hike up the Jack's River in the north Georgia Cohutta Wilderness, with my 10-year old son. Of the 10 or so active campsites we passed I only saw a total of 3 tents. Everybody is in hammocks!! I was quite blown away. Lots of Enos & similar, some Hennessys, a canvas beach style hammock, and even a Clarke Double. But almost nobody is in tents anymore. 2 years ago when I switched I was a guaranteed conversation starter, but now am starting to blend.

(Hammocks are the Vibram 5 Fingers of running shoes?)

Great trip though. Warbonnet BB here, son in a Claytor Mosquito. Fun wet time.

I was at Stone Mountain in NC and saw tons of Five Fingers. Unfortunately, I didn't see any other hammocks. Lots of tenters though.

Uh-oh! If hammocks become too mainstream, I'm going to have to find a new way to camp.

Just kidding. Glad to see others enjoying hammocks.

How did your boy like the trip?

It's funny, 5 years ago when I got off the ground, I (& others) thought that Hammocks would "Never be Main Stream!!" In fact up until about 3 years ago if you met a experienced backpacker (or camper0 the conversation was much like this:
Hiker: Man I slept awful last night, missed picking up ONE rock & it stuck in my back all night, plus I was sleeping on a 45degree hill cause I could NOT find a level spot.
    Hanger; Dude, I slept great!!
    Hiker: Where did you camp?!?!
Hanger; right next to Wet Point creek.
Hiker: And you found a flatspot?
Hanger: No, just 2 trees, I sleep in a hammock.
    Hiker: A WHAT?!?!?
    And on like that.

Soon, or so it seems, Hiker dude will be a relic & after the first line the question will be "Why, did your hammock break?" "No, I use a tent & sleep on the ground!" "A WHAT? OH, a Tent, yea I saw one of those once, in a history book. Those things are still around? Weird! How do you stay warm in the winter????"

    My dream anyway.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

That made me laugh Doctari. I hope they start catching on more out this way as well as in the SE. Lots of great places to hang out here too.

    Hey urbansix,

Probably saw you on the trail. Took a group of 7 Scouts and 4 adults to Jack's River this past weekend. All of us were in hammocks.

Wow, didn't realize that there were others from the North Metro Atlanta area in here.

How was Jacks' Trail? I'm heading up to ****'s Creek for some fishing this weekend.

Actually, there are lots of members in our local area. Jack's was great.
40+ river crossings in 16 miles. Not a cloud in the sky all weekend.
