The plant that provides PEF for me makes a lot of pads for laminate flooring.

I have that on a list of things to ask the manufacturer. Their plant is a finishing facility, so that's the kind of thing they do.

I have thought about that, but I want less attachment, to allow more gaps. The insulation needs to float free, inside the nylon.

Mac, I thought IX was supposed to be somewhat breathable. (which surprised me)

I'm loving my Baby Orca, but waiting to post more impressions until the colder weather arrives. So far my low temp was 45°F.

Yes, IX is breathable. Not very breathable, but technically it is breathable.

I have thought about ways to make PEF breathable, besides needle punching. The one I might try first is to make longitudinal overlapping layers, where the overlap is not stitched together. Those overlaps could be integrated with a pleat for loft.

    That's great!

And no one confuses your Baby Orca with an adult diaper, right?

Canoeski, I used my "SS" 2 layer version this weekend at about the same temps as you. I seemed to do a good bit better than on previous attempts, I suspect because I have learned to make it "fit better".

But now this PEF is throwing another very interesting option into the mix.

I received the following from someone who is trying to decide what to buy:
Still trying to decide... The new PE change has created an additional pause.
Thee is no reason to pause.

I'm testing PEF UQs now, while continuing to produce IX UQs made with Insultex. PEF probably won't affect the price, because labor is the dominant cost, but it will make the UQs a bit lighter. Who knows which will work best? We may stick with Insultex!

The reasons for testing PEF are 1) to see if a commodity can replace a proprietary component in Molly Mac Gear, and 2) if it works, then DIY makers will find it far easier to obtain than Insultex. PEF is made in many places in the US. All Insultex is made in one plant located in Korea.

If you are thinking of purchasing an IX UQ, go for it! You won't be able to tell much difference between an IX UQ and a PEF UQ.

Is PE foam the stuff that i'd have gotten as protective packing sheets -- once with certainteed vinyl shingle, and once with some window shades? I've been wearing it for a couple of years under a jacket and tucked into my pants (yes, not a diaper) as an informal booster for my mid-winter under-insulation system with great success. Never had a clue about R value. For what it's worth, I've folded/rolled/crunched it many times without degrading the sheet.

Funny how all this comes together. I just got 2 yards of IX out of the For Sale section, just to see what the stuff is like, and I happened to be installing laminate wood flooring with foam under it, and I was coming to the same conclusions as Ed. This is serendipitous and possibly fortuitous that I'm thinking the same thing as you're making and testing it.

I look forward to seeing what conclusions you come up with, as I need to build up my UQ and TQ setup for my new Blackbird.

    That's the same stuff, Lazarus!

Certainly sounds serendipitous and possibly fortuitous to me, Lonely Raven!
