    2 DIY hammock questions

    I promise, just 2....
    1. What kind of rope should I use to wrap the end on a gathered end hammock? I'm guessing amsteel won't work since it doesn't tie well? Or is there a knot that would work here.

    2. Planned on sewing three edges of a double layer ripstop hammock and then turning the bag inside out, then finishing the third edge by rolling it. If I do this do I need to heat the edges to prevent unraveling? They won't show.

Thanks everyone for all the help, I know I've asked a ton of questions in the last couple of weeks.

If your doing the warbonnet style and just gathering the channel, any string will do. You could use a shoelace. Then use the amsteel and larkshead it on.

The inside edge of your opening..fold it over twice to bury the selvage edge. No melting needed. I do a 1/2" or 3/8" fold, repeat. and sew.

when i did my double layers, i sew three sides, then all but the last inch or two of the last side, then flip inside out (or outside out I guess), then just fold over and close off the last bit of the end with a few stitches... then, i fold over about an inch on each long end to make the channel, and whip using some braided mason line from home depot (great for practice, and mockups of other ideas before i cut any amsteel)

That's what I want to do. Guess I could hand stitch the last inch? Is that enough to get it flipped inside out? Uh oh, that's more questions.

Maybe this weekend I will get this thing done.

I would recommend putting a rolled hem all the way around both layers, and then sewing the layers together like Risk does. Check the diagram at the bottom of this page:
    http://www.imrisk.com/zhammock/zhammock.htm

If you're whipping the ends, about any cord will do b/c you're not supporting any weight with it. Even shoestrings...although they're not ideal, they'll work. Accessory cord, paracord, etc.

I use gutted paracord for the end wrap. Removing the inner strings reduces bulk and their strength isn't needed.

Do you plan to use a closed cell foam pad with the double layer hammock? If yes, remember to leave and opening for inserting and removing the pad.
