    Hammock hanging orientation

I was wondering if there is any rule in the orientation you hang your hammock during bad weather condition or heavy wind. I have a Clark North American with XL Fly.

You want the tarp ends protected from windblown rain/snow...usually that means hanging the tarp broadside to the wind. This also protects it from cold wind in the winter, even if there's no precipitation.

With my clark I'll try to hang it so the foot end is into the wind. I do that because I can totally seal up that end and divert the wind around the hammock. I've got guy lines hanging from that end that I'll criss-cross and stake down. I do have to be very careful with how the hammock is hanging though as I don't want it so low that the tarp isn't protecting the bottom foot end from rain being blown in. One thing I don't want is rain being blown in from the head end. I like to "try" to have that end stay open. I've had to close it down a few times, sometimes I can get by with half way open. The middle guy lines will be staked out as far as I can get them. I don't like to be broad side the wind as it causes the tarp to be right on top of me and I've found with my Clark tarp that broad side wind/rain will get the bottom of my hammock wet. Most times, I only have a little bit of choice when setting up my hammock due to where the trees are. Practice helps. Especially practice in heavy rain.
