    Thumbs up New Aussie

hello, I'm trying to lurk on less forums and as I'm going to buy a hammock this week (WBBB) i thought i would introduce myself.

Im currently in South Australia and will use this fairly regularly. Every few months i camp out at some medium'ish dense forestry (for paintball). Semi regular camping trips (based out of a car generally)but i am also involved with the world solar car challenge so i will be trying my luck through out some of the deserts of Australia (desert = not very many trees)

Now for the obligatory questions... Im actually allergic to the cold (google it if you like) so being warm is important but i am having trouble sorting through information on under quilts. Temperatures would generally be getting down to 40 but they can get down to freezing (what ever that is in fahrenheit )

i am 5'10" and 240 (all this conversion is killing me!!!) so something big and wide would be good.

Other than that im sifting through tarps but i feel that is less of an involved decision as it is for shelter and may not be put up all the time...

Any other non american members help me out with postage (or other international hammock enthusiast) tips? or are the vendors for these products pretty good.

Welcome to HF! There a few members that hail from OZ. I imagine that they will be chiming in when they see your post. As for underquilts there a few cottage industries here on the forum. That can sell an under quilt that will keep you warm and toasty.

Regarding a partial UQ, a Warbonnet 3-season Yeti would be the most compact solution down to freezing (or a bit below). I've been happy with mine at 27 degrees F. (-3 degrees C.). For about 12 oz, it's been a good choice and packs down to 1 liter bottle size.

Not another bloody Aussie, Oh Great

    Hi Ginger Ninga.

I'm another Aussie hanger and like you am very new to this.

I've just brought a WBBB 1.1 double and a OES Standard Tarp in SpinnUL.

I'm quite a warm sleeper and had the same issues with temps on TQ's and UQ's as we have a very different climate here.

I ended up ordering a Te-wa summer 3/4 UQ and a custom Te-wa 5oz summer TQ. (I have a good kathmandu down bag for colder weather if required.

I'm still waiting on the quilts but Te-wa told me they would be shipping today, I can let you know what they are like temp wise if you like, I'll be using the hammock for 4 nights over October long weekend.

Also I purchased some whoopie slings, I just love how small they are compared to the stock webbing and they saved me a bit of weight.

Rest assured you will have no issues with any US sellers, home grown or store based. I have found all I have dealt with fantastic and cannot recommend the ones I have used enough.

Goodluck and you will not be sorry with a good hammock.

My main reason for getting a hammock was hunting, I carry enough gear without heaps of extra bulk with big heavy camping gear, that and most of the spots I hunt are mountainous and there are heaps of trees and not as many stealthy, flat camping spots. I love it, Now I can just hang where I like.

Welcome to the forums, don't bother doing the conversions. Speak to us in liters, kilo's, and Celsius, we'll convert it to what we're using. Knowing some of us it's stone's, hands, and who knows what.
