Labor Day in the Sawtooths, WA

I did a hang this Labor Day weekend on the east side of Sawtooth Ridge in North Central Washington State. I went with a friend and his son to several high lakes. This area is east of the Cascade crest, so it was much drier than stuff around the Puget Sound, with lots of high dry mountains, meadows and tons of larches that had not turned gold yet. My kind of place. Some pics:

There was an extreme windstorm that hit us Saturday night and I was forced to abandon my hang and go to ground in my friend's tent. Winds were perhaps 40 mph. I was not entirely comfortable with the camp choice to begin with (more exposed than I wanted) and my reservations were justified late that night when my tarp nearly got shreaded. Luckily, nothing was permanently damaged and we all survived. Live and learn. We retreated to the forest for Sunday night and the hang was peaceful. I have a more involved trip report here if you would care to look:

Well, it didn't get shredded, but it was headed that direction. It's an Equinox 10x12. I lost a grommet last year and started using grip clips for the tie-outs and one of them pulled out leaving a small hole in the tarp. That forced me to ground and the tent. Here is a picture of my location and setup:

I had the ends drawn tight and the ridge low, with one side tight to a rock. Still, the wind swirled and hit me from all directions with great velocity. Just a nasty night. Not sure there was a place at the lake that would have been protected that night.

hammocking in WA's mtns can be chilly

Having to drop to the ground when hammocking in the North Cascades of Washington - all too common...atleast at high elevations.

The possibility of having to drop down to the ground in the North Cascades due to cold or stormy weather or having to carry back-up ground gear like a foam pad has caused me to abandon the hammock on some backpacking trips. Not happy about that since the hammock is more comfortable and better than a tent for most rain.
