    Black Diamond Carabiners thoughts

More importantly, the Quick Draws. Any thoughts on this brand? I think they have been around for a long time and have quality stuff but is it worth the price? Are there any others out there that are just as good but at a better price?

Black diamond is quality climbing gear. Quick draws are rated for dynamic stress in climbing so if your using them for your hammock its no worries and probably over kill.

I have a couple of normal Black Diamonds on my wife's hammock. They were only 5$ apiece and have held up fine.

Super, thanks! I was also wondering if I am over-paying for my needs, which is the basic things hammockers use.

These are popular because I believe they are the lightest ones available- http://www.metoliusclimbing.com/fs_mini_carabiner.html

Climbing carabiners are way over kill for hanging from a hammock but there really isn't much in between keychain carabiners and climbing ones. I've got some ones that aren't strong enough to hang my food bag from that weigh more than those above.

The ultra light guys won't use biners because they weigh to much. Some guys prefer to tie knots or do a toggle setup. Depending on how your suspension attaches dutch clips are a really popular method and dutch biners were recently made available- http://www.jacksrbetter.com/DutchBiner.htm . Do a search on this forum for nacrabiner, it's a popular substitute using rope as a biner.

Me, I like a whoopie sling suspension attached to a tree strap with some of those light Metollus biners linked above. I like the fast, easy, secure, deploy, and I think carabiners just look cool.

I've been using the Black Diamond ovals, but I'm putting them with my day hike travel hammock gear and moving to the Metolius minis.

    BD is Uber Quality stuff

I do not know what today's protocol is, but at one time each and every 'biner was tested to a specific load (more than body weight, less than rated for obvious reasons).

    Mad Rock Ultra-Light

    http://www.madrockclimbing.com/produ...p?_item=100049

Lighter, cheaper, and can handle a slightly heavier load than Black Diamonds HotWire 'biners, and the Black Diamond 'biners only get more expensive from there. These are the 'biners that came with my GT nano7. I've used them repeatedly to snap my tree huggers to their trees and I'm what you might call a 'Heavy Hanger'.

    Mamutt Moses

    http://www.altrec.com/mammut/moses-carabiner

I used Black Diamonds exclusively and own a dozen of them. Now, I uses Mammut Moses only. MUCH lighter. Pair of black Diamonds = 2.7-3.9 oz (varies by model). Mammut Moses pair 1.0 ounce. I weighed them myself

The difference in weight is noticable wven whne you pick them up. But still climbing rates. $9 each as opposed to $7 for BD. Worth every single penny. Skip a latte for a day or two for the differnce. It's fantastic--see the reviews here. I own Moses's already, and just ordered 6 more. Why? I'll be wicked depressed if they stop making them--stock up now.
