I Finally Made One Decision! Now On To The Next.

I am new to hanging and plan to spend a good amount of time this fall on the AT in the Maine woods. I have been debating for a while on which UQ to purchase. I would love to make my own, but I just do not have the sewing skills. Anyway, it has not been an easy choice. There are some great products out there, and the Hammock Forums have really helped to make sense of it all. After a great deal of back and forth I ordered a 3 season Crows Nest this morning. Why did I choose a Hammock Gear product?

    1. High Quality Products. Based on all the feedback I have seen it is obvious that Hammock Gear takes pride in it's products and craftmanship. But other vendors do as well.

    2. Balance. For me, the 3 season Crows Nest is a great balance between weight, quality and thermal protection. But there are other UQ's that are also provide these attributes.

So why ultimately did I choose Hammock Gear? I love the fact that Adam is so involved with his customers. He actively communicates on the forums and it is clear that he listen's to their feedback and is always striving to better his product and service. I have worked in retail sales for over 20 years and to me who I am buying from is as important as the product they sell.

So thanks for being a great vendor Adam. I am counting the days until I can enjoy your product. Get it here fast man. I don't want to miss the Fall weather up here.

So now I could use some thoughts on a TQ. I am a hot sleeper and will have the Crows Nest below me with a CCF pad for the feet. I want to go as light as possible for the TQ. What does everyone recommend for temps down to the mid 40's?

do you already have a summer weight down bag? try turning it so the zipper opening is down, stick feet in and drape it over you...too warm? push it down; too cool? put on a hat; or add a fleece layer (jacket or 'sofa throw' type item)
This might give an estimation of how much top insulation you need. Back yard experimentation will reveal all! HTH, KM

NB- this should be done with UQ in Place, as under insulation is soo important!

Shug- From one MN to another MN

I spent all last summer on the AT finishing up on Katahdin on October 6, 2009. I will tell you, it's VERY cold that time of the year even so early. If it's 40* here in MN, it could be 25* there since you could be 2-5000 feet higher. Just an FYI.

Why deviate from what you already know is good? My Burrow is my new favorite piece of gear. It feels so nice and is extremely light for the amount of warmth if provides. It has some very thoughtful features and the quality is excellent, as always with Adam's products.
oldgringo's reply to my worrying about owning extra hammocks:

How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?

I can relate to this, I too put alot of thought into it before I buy. I have my own debates too about equipment and how to find what works for me. In the TQ arena, I have to think about both warm weather and cold. I am going to try using a silk liner to make my set up as adaptable as possible. An extra 10 of warmth is alleged.. ktstone thinks I'm nuts, but this gear has to serve a dual purpose for me. I am NOT spending another month sleeping in a hot house in the South without AC after a storm.. And I HAVE to be able to sleep to do anybody any good after a storm.
For Cold, I went with the Jacks... Hudson river... So far, so good. Still testing stuff. Good luck and watch and read... that is what I have done.

I don't know why your telling me this..... I did not select his UQ for him.
Just letting him know that it is a good product that I feel for sure will go to 30º and he said he is a hot sleeper.
By the way.....Way to go on the thru.......
