Greetings all! Just wanted to say it's been a pleasure to find such a welcoming, helpful, inventive community on the internet.
I've been a ground dweller for many years of camping and backpacking. The last few years have been spent not in woods, but succombed to the misdirected philosophy of, "Don't have time to camp now, gotta make the money." Earlier this year, my wife and I began the process of getting back out on the trail, knowing that there will always be work, but grabbing every opportunity to do what we enjoy most -- hiking, camping, backpacking, and paddling.
In re-outfitting ourselves, I wanted to adopt some ultralight practices. That's how I came across hammock camping and the HF. You folks have been a wealth of info. Thanks.
I have to say I was skeptical at first based on my very bad experience with a hammock a long time ago (didn't know about laying on the diagonal). But after hanging out here, hearing the argument for hanging, it's pretty compelling to get off the ground. How can anyone not want a hammock after watching Shug's videos. Thanks Shug!
As of last weekend, I can admit we are converts. Based on the tips and info here, got two hammocks made and spent two nights in the backyard testing them. Good bye ground! Now I'm on to the tarps, then hammocks for the kids.
I look forward to getting to know ya'll.
Joe
