    Hello from East TN

Greetings all! Just wanted to say it's been a pleasure to find such a welcoming, helpful, inventive community on the internet.

I've been a ground dweller for many years of camping and backpacking. The last few years have been spent not in woods, but succombed to the misdirected philosophy of, "Don't have time to camp now, gotta make the money." Earlier this year, my wife and I began the process of getting back out on the trail, knowing that there will always be work, but grabbing every opportunity to do what we enjoy most -- hiking, camping, backpacking, and paddling.

In re-outfitting ourselves, I wanted to adopt some ultralight practices. That's how I came across hammock camping and the HF. You folks have been a wealth of info. Thanks.

I have to say I was skeptical at first based on my very bad experience with a hammock a long time ago (didn't know about laying on the diagonal). But after hanging out here, hearing the argument for hanging, it's pretty compelling to get off the ground. How can anyone not want a hammock after watching Shug's videos. Thanks Shug!

As of last weekend, I can admit we are converts. Based on the tips and info here, got two hammocks made and spent two nights in the backyard testing them. Good bye ground! Now I'm on to the tarps, then hammocks for the kids.

I look forward to getting to know ya'll.

    Joe

Welcome to the HF community. As you have already learned hanging in the trees is far superior to ground dwelling. Keep poking around here and you will find all kinds ideas. That will keep you and your family happily occupied for years to come.

If you'd like to quickly increase your learning curve, take the short trip up the road to Hot Springs, NC this weekend to check out the hang there, Friday through Sunday morning. You could easily just do a day trip for just Saturday.

It would give you the chance to meet other hangers, check out various rigs, tarps, underquilts, pad setups, and so forth. You could take pictures to get more ideas for DIY projects as well. And you could always enjoy a trip to the hot springs while you're at it!

I got into hammocking via same route as I was researching for an ultralite tent and stumbled across hammock forums. Now I'm addicted.

Welcome to the madness. Hopefully you can stop by Hot Springs. Even though I have gone out camping in my hammocks several time I am still new at it hope to learn alot at the hang.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
