    Middle Fork Salmon River trip

Just got back last night from 8 days on the Middle Fork Salmon. I took my hammock set-up, and used it for several nights on the trip. This was a trial run to see how the hammock sleep system would work on a river trip. With the MacCat Deluxe tarp & KAQ underquilt I stayed warm, dry and comfy. The biggest problem I had was a lack of appropriately spaced trees in some camps, and no trees at all on beach camps. I still will need to bring my tent/roll-a-cot/thermarest with me on river trips. However, bringing along the lightweight hammock set-up as well is no problem. It fits into my drybag easily. Putting up the hammock & tarp is so quick & easy compared to all that stooping & bending with the tent. I did learn that I need polyester webbing suspension, as the nylon stuff I brought had way too much stretch. I loved the fine tuning of using the webbing & descender rings.....very easy to adjust. The Mac Cat Deluxe tarp was a great size, and so incredibly lightweight. I'm attaching a few pics from the trip.

It's good to hear that your hammock set up worked well for you. At least in the places where you could find trees to hang from that is. Thanks for sharing the pictures. I see in the third picture that you are using a net hammock for your gear. I really need to quit procrastinating and get a gear hammock made and start using it. It would help immensely to keep my gear and camp organized.

    mesh hammock

The mesh hammock was actually set up next to mine, and was used by my friend's ten year old daughter during the day for "just hanging out." The hammocks were attached to the same tree at one end, and different trees at the other. This was at one of our layover camps, so we spent all afternoon in our hammocks.....reading & napping. It was grand !!!!
